Dosing
As with most endocrine products, the appropriate dose rate has to be defined individually for each dog. Treatment with Leventa should be initiated at a recommended dose rate of 20 µg L-thyroxine per kg once daily (0.1 mL per 10 lbs body weight) and re-evaluated every four weeks by monitoring T4 serum levels four to six hours post-treatment. According to the T4 levels, the dose should be adjusted if needed. Once the dosage that resolves the clinical signs of hypothyroidism is determined (the maintenance dosage), serum T4 levels four to six hours post-treatment should be checked every six months. The usual maintenance dosage is 20 µg L-thyroxine per kg once daily (0.1 mL/10 lbs).
Leventa can be administered directly to the dog, or placed on the dog’s food. Placing Leventa on the dog’s food is only recommended for dogs that are impossible to pill or for “gobblers,” dogs that readily consume their food. The stability of the levothyroxine in Leventa may be affected by prolonged contact with food.
Absorption of the levothyroxine in Leventa is decreased by the presence of food in the intestinal tract, with peak absorption occurring in fasted dogs. If Leventa is administered with food, it is important to keep CONSISTENT the route of administration. T4 levels, non-representative of the norm, can be obtained if the route of administration is changed prior to serum sampling.
